Day 03- A habit that you wish you didn’t have.

Biting my fingers and lips when I'm nervous! I wish I had beautiful hands and lips but I do this unconsciously and don't realize it until someone asks me "why are you biting your lips?" or stares at me in a "why the hell is she eating herself?" kind of way.... Trying VERY hard to get rid of this nasty habit!

MAC Fabulous Felines

So I wasn't planning on getting anything from this collection but I was walking by the MAC store during my lunch break and saw an eyeshadow from the Fabulous felines that I just fell in love with. It's not exactly the most groundbreaking colour, but I had really wanted a nice shimmery gold colour and this seemed to be the perfect colour I was looking for. It's called Skintone 2 and it's described as a dirty gold that's a frost. I asked if they could be purchased separately but who are we kidding here? It's MAC. So I left and didn't get it. Then I walked back the other day and thought "oh what the heck", being the shopaholic I am, I decided to get it anyway and try to make the colours work together.

I have to say this is a really great palette and I've been using it everyday ever since I got it. Not 100% sure right now whether it's from the guilt of buying it or that it's actually a good everyday look but I'm trying to convince myself it's the latter. That aside, I do believe that this is a really nice everyday look. The colours are: Burmese Beauty (Top Left), Showstopper (Top Right), Skintone 2 (Bottom Left) and Prized (Bottom Right).

The only disappointment I have about this palette is that the Burmese Beauty is not as pigmented as I wanted it to be. I really thought it'd be a nice duochrome brown/teal colour. But sometimes it shows up as just brown or just teal, so I have to really pack on the colour to make it show. It doesn't work without a primer also. I think I might have to add a base to make it stick better too. I'll try that tomorrow. It kind of reminds me of my MAC Blue Brown Pigment.

I definitely recommend getting this palette because the colours are beautiful and they're more worth it than buying each colour individually (even though you can't). It was $45 for all for shadows whereas 4 shadows plus a magnetic palette would usually cost $57. So you are saving money by buying the quad. I just wish that we could choose the colours we wanted to from all the fabulous felines quads and make our own rather than having set quads.

I'll be reviewing Revlon's Matte lipsticks soon so stay tuned!

Day 02- A picture of something you cannot live without.

Been a little M.I.A. for the last couple of days cause I'm still getting ready for the big move. Trying to spend as much quality time as I can with my sister and my friends before I leave. I'm so blessed to have so many people in my life that care so much about me. Onto the challenge!

I didn't take this picture but this is what I wouldn't be able to live without:

Yes that's right. It's my foundation! I've tried to use drugstore products in the past and nothing has worked for me without breaking me out. This stuff is so amazing that I shell out $44 almost ever 1.5 months. I'm not a big fan of heavy coverage so this stuff is perfect for me since it evens out the skin tone without clogging my pores. It's the ONLY reason that my skin is clear now. I tried so hard to find a drugstore product that would give the same effect and be less pricy but I can't find it. I tried the L'oreal Truematch, Revlon Colorstay, Revlon Photoready, Maybelline Age Rewind... and a few others. They either break me out or don't have the right shade for me. So this is the best product for me ever. I don't know how I'm going to do after I move. Hopefully the climate change won't cause me to change my mind cause I'll go nuts looking for another foundation!

That's all for now.

She's really fun to talk to and I love reading her blog. Since I've been M.I.A. I've decided to start this 30 day challenge. Hopefully it will keep me updating and my blog will really start looking like a blog:

Day 28- A picture of you last year and now, how have you changed since then?
Day 29- In this past month, what have you learned.
Day 30- A picture of you today & 20 goals you want to accomplish.

I'm gonna be completely honest and just say that I probably will have days where I don't update but will make up for it the next day. So it's probably not gonna be an actual 30-day challenge. But I will try my best cause I'm moving away to a different country soon to study. So I will be busy getting everything packed, unpacked, used to the new school, the new country, etc..

Day 01- A recent picture of you and 15 interesting facts about yourself.

1. I'm terrified of ghosts
2. Makeup & fashion are my weaknesses, addictions and they consume my life
3. I study Health Sciences and I specialize in HIV/AIDS
4. I can't drink any beverage that has sat there for a few hours after midnight.
5. I never date the right guys (but then again not many people do)
6. I know how to solve a rubiks cube
7. I like to correct people's grammar and spelling
8. I'm fluent in sarcasm
9. I have a really short temper and get bored/irritated easily
10. My sister is my best friend
11. I probably qualify as an insomniac and huge procrastinator
12. My hair is naturally frizzy and pouffy
13. I have an intense love for dresses and wish everyday could be dress day
14. I love Taylor Swift and bought a guitar that I don't know how to play because of her
15. I have mastered the art of procrastination

Are YOU breaking out?

I normally don't breakout and it sucks that I'm going through one right now for I don't know what reason. Two giant friends decided to emerge out of my face and say hello to the world. Great for them... not so great for me. So aside from covering them up the best I can, I've been going around trying to figure out how to get them to go away. These 2 large zits are the BIGGEST I have ever had in my entire life. I swear I'm not even lying on this one. SO, after two days I'm finally starting to see a difference. So how do you get rid of a pimple? Read on:

1. Cleanse your face (2 times a day - no more, no less)
2. Moisturize your face. Even though you think the moisturizer might cause it to grow more, believe it or not, dry skin can exacerbate excessive sebum production and cause more pimples!
3. Take a clean Q-tip and dip it in rubbing alcohol (I just use a generic brand 95%)
4. Take that Q-tip and press it over your zit. Hold it there until you feel it tingle or sting a bit. Then hold it there for another 10 seconds (don't do this if you can't stand the pain cause chances are it's popped and you're putting rubbing alcohol on your raw skin. Ew.)
5. Let the rubbing alcohol absorb and evaporate for a minute
6. Dab tea tree oil on the zit.
7. Sleep it off

As you can see, this is pretty easy and relatively cheap. I used to use tooth paste back in high school then I realized that it just didn't work. This honestly is the fastest way to dry out a pimple for me. Or if you feel one coming, doing this right away will prevent it from becoming a full-blown pimple. The other day I had a tiny little pimple that had pus in it (sorry I know that probably just grossed you out). I did the above, and now you can't even see it. I didn't give it the chance to turn into a pimple. Whereas before this, there was another zit just like this one only I left it alone and now it's among the 2 giant zits that colonized on my face.

Comment below if you tried it and it worked/didn't work for you.

Skin care!

I've always said that the most important thing about having a flawless face is prepping it for makeup with amazing skin. I feel no matter how "ugly" your features are, as long as you have flawless skin you will look beautiful no matter what. I feel like no matter how beautiful someone's features are, if they don't have skin that looks good, it ruins their entire look.

I'm not saying in any way that people who have problem skin do not deserve to be beautiful, but that skin is probably the most important feature when it comes to beauty. That's my own opinion and I know people may think otherwise. Some people think the eyes are most important and some may think lips. It's all relative to the eye of the beholder.

So I'm going to share with you what I have learned in the last 10 years of doing makeup and taking care of my skin. I always get complimented at work and school about how good my skin is and they always ask me what foundation I'm using, when in actuality, it doesn't matter what foundation you use. I could be using cheap foundation and still look good with good skin. But of course, my sensitive acne prone skin wouldn't allow that. I have a step by step system for my skin which I'll share. But keep in mind this works for MY skin and will not work for everyone. The products I mentioned are from brands I'm not in any way affiliated with but I have been using for at least 2 years and have given me no problems. This is especially hard because my skin has a life of it's own!

CLEANSING
By cleansing I mean everything taking off all the gunky makeup from the day and making sure it stays off! I always wash my face morning and night no matter what. Even if I'm tired from a long day and just wanna pass out on my bed I always drag myself to the bathroom and take EVERYTHING off. I use a cotton pad with a wipe-off cleanser to remove the make up first. Most of my skin care is by the company Avène. I love their products because they are so gentle on my skin and their products get rid of my acne, scarring and soothes my sensitive skin.
The wipe-off cleanser I use is the Micellar Lotion Cleanser and Makeup Remover:

I just put a bit of this on a cotton pad and wipe off all the makeup on my face. Usually it won't get everything off so I'll turn the cotton pad around and wipe again. This usually takes off about 80% of the makeup off my face.

Then I use the Cleanance Soapless Gel Cleanser for oily, blemish-prone sensitive skin:

This is an amazing cleanser that not only cleans my face but isn't too harsh that it strips my skin of moisture. It takes off all the makeup needed to be removed but leaves my skins natural oils alone. It also helps fight blemishes and keeps acne at bay. I rarely have breakouts anymore (unless it's the makeup that causes them). I really recommend it. I'm on my 3rd bottle and have been using it for more than 2 years (it's a really good amount for what you pay). I also bought another bottle when I was on vacation and recently bought 1 more bottle because it was on sale with 25% bonus (size). YES, THAT'S HOW MUCH I LOVE IT, GIRLS!

TONER
Now, I know a lot of people think it's unnecessary to have a toner because they really don't do anything. I used to feel the same way until I started using a toner that worked for me. This one isn't part of the Avène line but it's a worthy mention because I've been using it longer than I've been using Avène and it actually helps keep my combination (oily t-zone) skin close to normal. It's the L'oreal Ideal Balance for Combination Skin

Now, I think this product is in the process of being reformulated cause I can't find it ANYWHERE! Yes, I've searched every drugstore near my house. So I'm now using Garnier's Fresh toner which pretty much does the same thing but I've only been using it for a few days so I'll update on this later on:

This toner smells like fresh green apples and it doesn't irritate my skin so I'll keep using it for a bit unless it starts to break me out or something.
Using a toner is really important as a part of your skincare routine because it helps prepare your skin for moisturizer. It maintains a proper pH balance for your skin and allows the moisturizer to be absorbed into your skin rather than staying as a layer on top and clogging your pores.

MOISTURIZE
It is CRUCIAL for you to moisturize your skin no matter what type of skin you have. I have so many girls come to me telling me that they don't use moisturizer because they're skin is so oily. NO!!! That could actually lead you to be more oily that you have to be and cause more acne and blemishes because your skin thinks it should produce more oils!  Because I have really sensitive skin, I really need to watch out for the products I use. Especially moisturizer. I used to use Cetaphil but got a HUGE reaction from that. Now I have a daytime and a nighttime moisturizer. For daytime I wear Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel:

This is a nice lightweight moisturizer that doesn't feel greasy. Because it's a gel, it helps hide my pores and acts kind of like a primer for my makeup. I really like this stuff because it feels really cool when you put it on. It soothes my skin really nicely.

For nighttime, I wear Avène's Cream for Intolerant Skin:

This is the magical secret weapon for me. It cleared redness, sensitivity, acne and everything from my annoying skin that likes to breakout for no reason. It's quite expensive for the amount you get but it's the best thing I've ever used and that's why I still use it now. I highly recommend this to people who have combination skin like I do that's sensitive to anything it pretty much touches!

EXFOLIATING
I only exfoliate once a while because I find if i do it too often my skin tends to revolt and retaliate with an army of breakouts. Some people call this "purging", I just refer to it as my skin's attitude. But I do know the importance of sloughing off dead skin cells every once in a while. I try to do it every week but sometimes I'll forget for many weeks at a time. Just know it's also important so that your dead skin cells don't clog your pores. I recommend something with round beads because natural seed scrubs can actually do more damage than good as the natural seeds are ground into uneven pieces that may scratch and tear your skin. One such example would be apricot scrubs. Really popular but really bad for you.
I use Avène's Gentle Purifying Scrub:

I like this scrub because the beads are smooth and round and they don't feel abrasive on my skin. I also like that they're coloured orange so that I can see all the beads on my face and wash all of them off. I find for other scrubs I used before with white beads, I'd find a few pieces of the scrub still stuck on my face the morning after which really sucked.

I then usually treat myself to a moisturizing mask to get back all the moisture I lost from sloughing off all the dead skin. This is important because although it doesn't feel like it, scrubs actually do a lot of major cleaning on your face and even with a gentle scrub like the Avène one, it may still have made tears in your skin that you can't see. That's why you need to moisturize a lot so that it will heal faster. I use Avène's Soothing Moisture Mask:
This mask is really gentle. It's not thick and heavy and it's really easy to use. It feels like a moisturizer and you just spread a thin even layer on your face, wait 10 minutes and then either wipe off or spray with Avène's thermal water and pat dry. I usually just wipe it away cause I don't usually buy the thermal water unless it's included in some sort of holiday kit that they usually have. It's honestly just water in a spray can.

That's pretty much all I do for my face. I will make a post about foundation next. I'll let you know what worked for me, what didn't. What I usually look for in a foundation and why I use what I use.

p.s. Sorry for sounding like a giant Avène commercial/ad, I just really like their products and it just so happens that a lot of the things I stuck with these past few years have been from this company. But use your own discretion and decide what will work for your own skin. If you are like me from 2 years ago and are at wit's end about facial products, because you have skin like mine, try this brand. It may just be your life saver as it was mine =)

Coastal Scents Review + FOTD

So a while ago I went youtube crazy and saw how these coastal palettes were used so much in tutorials and favourites videos so I wanted to get one for myself. At the time I was just colour crazed and wanted all the colours of the rainbow (practical or not). So here's my review for the two palettes I got:

88 Color Eye Shadow Palette

This is the original palette that Coastal scents came up with and you can even find the same palette from a no name brand on eBay. I can't really say if it's cheaper cause when I was buying it I remember calculating which would be cheaper and I ended up going with coastal scents.  Also, I heard that these are pretty fragile so I liked having the peace of mind that if anything happened during shipping that I could still exchange it or something. But they came perfectly so never mind that.
Some people refer to this palette as the matte palette but as you can probably see, not all the colours here are matte. some have pearl finishes and some are really metallic looking. There's a good assortment of colours and 88 seems like enough colours until you relaize there are some colours that you just don't have.

Here's the other palette:

88 Ultra Shimmer Eye Shadow Palette

My excitement was beyond anything else when I received these in the mail and for a few days all I did was stare at the pretty colours and swatch them on my fingers non-stop, being all giddy like a little girl. When it actually came to using the palette, I became overwhelmed with all the colours. Some of the colours in the palette are really similar to the point where if you finished one you could just go for the other one and you'd have the same look. That could be good or bad depending on how much you like the colour. I think these palettes are really great if you're just starting out with makeup and don't have many eyeshadow colours cause the chances of using this up quickly are slim.
Even though the all the eyeshadows are smaller than a dime you still get a pretty decent amount of product because they are pretty pigmented. Some of them, I have to admit, are pretty chalky and chunky in the Shimmer palette. But I still find the shimmer palette to be a lot more useful for creating brighter looks than the matte palette. I use both just cause matte colours tend to saturate colours more so I'll use the shimmer first and then saturate the colour with the matte on top. The colours from the 2 palettes correspond to each other so a shimmery purple will be a matte purple of the same (or close) shade in the matte palette.

Looking at this now you might think it's actually a lot of colours and you'd be pretty much done with eyeshadow hunting after you buy these palettes. In reality, I find myself not reaching for these palettes so much because of 3 reasons.

1) I have this burning feeling that if I use it too much I'll use up one colour and have to replace the palette for that colour (probably not going to happen though)

2) How often do YOU wear hot pink and neon yellow eyeshadow?

3) I find that once you get used to these palettes you'll start realizing that there's all these colours that you DON'T have. Which snowballs into a gigantic eyeshadow spending spree (say at MAC...). For example, theres no duochrome colours and I've been crazy about duochrome lately, putting them on my cheeks, nails, eyeshadow, etc.. but one day I just realized I didn't have any. But that's just me being a complete diva.

Overall I really like these palettes cause it's nice to know that you'll have all these random colours if you ever find yourself thinking "if only I had a hot pink eyeshadow to match my shoes"

I have had only one occasion of it crumbling but that's cause I accidentally knocked it over when I was sleeping once and broke it. I fixed it buy crushing the whole shadow into powder and putting alcohol in it as a mixing medium and then pressing it back. I lost a lot of product doing that though (like 1/3) cause it was a messy process. But I found after doing that the shadow seems less pigmented. I don't know I'll experiment with it a bit more.

Moving on... I got a bit bored today and decided to experiment with a more natural look that looks like you're not wearing any makeup. Here's what I came up with:

FOTD - Drugstore

Face:
Physician's Formula - Organic Wear Tinted Moisturizer
Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder in 005 Silky Beige
Revlon matte blush in 002  Blushing Berry
Annabelle bronzer in Mattitude (L/E)

Eyes:
Smashbox Photofinish Lid Primer
Wet 'n' Wild ColorIcon in 249 Vanity - Top right colour for lid, middle left colour for crease,  top left colour for brow bone highlight.
Covergirl Perfect Point Plus eyeliner in 210 Expresso (smudged)
Covergirl Brow & Eye Makers in Midnight Brown
Covergirl Lashblast Mascara in Very Black (HG)

Lips:
Maybelline Lipstick in G132 Nude Blush

I'm pretty happy with how this look turned out cause I haven't done any really natural looks lately cause I usually wear smoky neutral browns to work. I kind of like using tinted moisturizer rather than foundation and might go for this look more often now. The key to this look is minimal eye makeup. I usually put eyeliner really boldly on my lashline but decided to smudge out all the lines today.

That's all for now!

Favourite Eyeshadows

I think my first post will be of eyeshadows cause the haul is still fresh (I just got the wet 'n' wild ones today).

My all time favourites are still MAC eyeshadows of course, and I've compiled a 15-piece pro palette of all neutral colours because those are the colours I use the most and I find myself constantly reaching for this palette. MAC is my favourite high-end brand for anything but their foundations. Their foundations break me out because I have really sensitive skin so I have to really be careful about the liquid/cream products that I put on my face (particularly my cheeks, chin and forehead).  I have 14 pro refill pans:

I organized the highlight colours at the top, the lid colours in the middle and crease/blending/outer corner colours at the bottom. Sorry the picture quality isn't that great. From left to right is the following:

1. Crystal Avalanche
2. Nylon
3. Rice Paper
4. Goldmine
5. Naked Lunch

6. Satin Taupe
7. Woodwinked
8. Bronze
9. All That Glitters
10. Expensive Pink

11. Embark
12. (Nothing - waiting for a silver shadow)
13. Soft Brown
14. Bamboo
15. Amber Lights

Yes, all of these colours are common favourites and I meant for them to be that way. That's why they're my favourite shadows that I reach for most often! =) I'm really happy with all of them. I use Crystal avalanche for inner corners when I do smokey grey looks and Nylon in the inner corners when I do neutral/brown looks. I use Rice Paper as a brow bone highlighter and Naked Lunch sometimes as well for pink/neutral looks. Satin Taupe, Woodwinked, Goldmine, All That Glitters and Amber lights are used as all-over colours. Embark  and Bronze are used as outer corner colours. Soft brown is my favourite crease/blending colour. Sometimes I'll find that Soft brown is too harsh of a blending colour so I'll use Bamboo in place of that. Other times, I'll use both with Soft Brown as a crease colour and Bamboo above it to blend.

Next are my brand new Wet 'n' Wild Eyeshadows. These eyeshadows are EXTREMELY pigmented (except for 3 of the shadows). I have all 4 of the ColorIcon palettes: Greed, Pride, Lust and Vanity. The best part about these palettes is that most of them are serious dupes for MAC shadows that I don't own (except Embark and All That Glitters). Each palette was around $5-6 so they definitely trump MAC shadows for price. I find that some of them are even better quality (more pigmented) than their MAC counterparts. I've actually labelled all the MAC dupes of each colour on the palette cover. These were discovered by one of my favourite makeup gurus on youtube EasyAccessBeauty. I also have pictures of them swatched on my fingers. So here they are:

246 - Greed

1. Blanc Type - Matte soft peach
2. Samoa Silk - Matte peachy orange brown
3. Carbon - Matte black
4. Idol Eyes - Shimmery periwinkle silver
5. All That Glitters (kind of) - Shimmery pink/peach
6. Black Tied - Matte black with silver glitter

As you can see they're all pretty pigmented. I don't know if you can tell, but the blue and the pink ones are not as pigmented. I had to really dig my fingers into the shadow to get that pigment to go onto my fingers. But I tried applying it with NYX jumbo pencils (lavender for the blue/silver and strawberry milk for the pink) and they showed up perfectly fine. It's just an extra step I'd rather not have to have but the rest of the shadows are amazingly pigmented.

247 - Pride

1. Gesso - Matte white
2. Newly Minted - Matte mint green
3. Nehru - Matte navy blue
4. A shimmery butter colour
5. Steamy - Shimmery sea foam green
6. Deep Truth - Shimmery navy blue

I love all of these except for the butter coloured one because that one is really chalky and hard to blend. That's why there's no MAC dupe for it!

248 - Lust

1. Pen N Pink - Matte baby pink
2. Fig. 1 - Matte purple/magenta
3. Shadowy Lady - Dark plum
4. Vanilla (found after picture was taken) - Soft cream colour with peachy tones and silver glitter
5. Night Divine - Shimmery dark grey/slate
6. Beauty Marked - Matte black with purple glitter

All of these are SUPER pigmented. I like the dupe for Beauty Marked the most because the actual MAC shadow shows up as a matte black with tiny amounts of purple glitter if you're lucky, whereas this shadow actually distributes the purple glitter really evenly.

249 - Vanity

1. Malt or Bisque - Matte light peach
2. Cork or Wedge (more like Wedge) - Matte khaki
3. Embark - Matte dark brown with red undertones
4. Nylon - Shimmery pale yellow
5. Gorgeous gold - Shimmery cool-toned gold
6. Mulch - Shimmery dark brown with pink undertones

I love all of these even though I already have Embark and Nylon. I was gonna buy Bisque and Gorgeous Gold but now I really don't feel the need to do spend $26 plus tax for them =P

I also bought a single ColorIcon shadow because this one screamed HUMID from the MAC To the Beach collection which I had been really wanting to get but never did because I just couldn't justify spending so much on one collection.. especially for a shimmery green shadow. I'm so glad I got this because this was only less than $3 as opposed to MAC which is $17. It's a super pigmented forest green with gold undertones like Humid!

Lastly, there is another quad that I constantly pick up to use. The quality is not quite as good as MAC or the Wet 'n' Wild ones (I know, I never thought I'd say Wet 'n' Wild has better quality than ANYTHING)  but the colours in the palette are made to be used together and it's so convenient. It's the palette I reach for most when I don't know what to put on in the morning but don't want to look washed out. It gives a really nice smoky eye look for everyday wear. It's the Maybelline Stylish Smokes Quad in 02 Natural Smokes:

02 - Natural Smokes

It's kind of faded because I use this quad so much, but this quad is good for beginners because it etches into the shadow which colour should be used on the lid, crease, brow bone, and outer corner. I use the top left colour as an all over lid colour, the top right for the crease colour, the bottom left on my brow bone and the bottom right as an outer corner and lower liner. The bottom right colour is really pigmented so I use it as a liner for my lower lash line because I think eyeliners look to harsh there and they tend to smudge too easily (especially pencil) for me. Some people also say that these are MAC dupes as well, like the top left is Satin Taupe, the top right is Mulch, the bottom left is bisque and the bottom right is Dark brown. I just completely disregard that because the texture and consistency of this product is so different than MAC that it's really not comparable at all. Yes, if you don't have a lot of money for eyeshadows this could be good for you. But if you expect quality, this won't give you the quality that MAC would give (or Wet 'n' Wild) because you have to really work with these colours for them to show up (except for the bottom right colour). But I still really like it because it's really convenient that all the colours you need for a look are in one tiny palette.

I'll do a post on the Coastal Scents 88 Matte Palette and the 88 Shimmer Palette next!

Introduction

After lemming over this idea for a long time, I decided I wanted to create something personal for myself and others to read about my interests. I debated for a long time whether I wanted to do a blog or a Youtube channel that I could update regularly about products I like/dislike, general beauty, fashion, and other miscellaneous things.

So let's start from square one. I have no followers. I have no certificate in any beauty related profession. I'm not even a guru. Beauty and fashion is my ultimate passion, and while I am not looking into a career in it, it does consume much of my time. It's one of those things that fascinates me because not everything will look good on any given person. Everything in this blog will be my personal opinion and I'm not affiliated with any company at the moment.
